Cattail (Typha spp.)
Common Cattail
Leaves are tall, flat and up to 1" wide. Stems are tall, round and unbranched. Flower is the distinctive two part cigar-shaped cattail nearly continuous without space between spikes. These spikes are green in the early summer and turn brown and fuzzy in fall. This weed has an extensive root system. Difficult to control when well established. Stout rootstocks make this weed difficult to pull out.
Narrowleaf Cattail
Leaves are tall, flat and less than 1/2" wide. Stems are tall, round and unbranched. Flower is the distinctive two part cigar-shaped cattail with about 1" separation between spikes. These spikes are green in the early summer and turn brown and fuzzy in fall. This weed has an extensive root system. Difficult to control when well established. Stout rootstocks make this weed difficult to pull out.
