A customer recently contacted us regarding weed & algae control. Below is the question and our response.
Question:
Hi, wondering if your product can help reduce the green floating scum on the top of my “pond”, which is actually a run off easement. It is about ½ acre in size and the water smells bad, and is gross and mucky. It has nasty green snails floating in it, cattails and even small leach-looking creatures that stick to our toy motorized boat! Anyhow, I am trying to find a product to clean up the water so the dogs can swim in it and someone to clear out the dead cattails floating in it. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:
Green floating scum may be a form of algae. Planktonic Algae will thrive in a small, nutrient filled pond.
Copper Sulfate is an excellent option for most varieties of Planktonic Algae. It will also affect snails in water that carry the parasites causing swimmers itch and leeches. One 50 lb bag of Copper Sulfate is $209.00 delivered. To order, call us today at 800-328-9350. A ½ acre pond would require 40 lbs. Copper Sulfate per treatment.
The Weed Razer Pro and Water Weed Rake are two good options for removal of dead Cattails.
AquaClear Pellets are a natural bacteria that will not kill algae but will reduce the nutrient level in the pond. AquaClear Pellets will also lower the level of muck, speed up cattail decay, reduce the bad smell and improve overall quality of the water. Your ½ acre pond would require 10 lbs. of AquaClear Pellets per treatment. For best results, apply weekly for a minimum of 4 weeks or until desired water quality is achieved.

When used according to product label directions our products will not harm any animal life including horses and dogs.
20 lbs of Copper Sulfate will treat a 1/4 surface acre pond. Crystal Blue is not a natural bacteria it IS Copper Sulfate. We do not sell Natural Pond Cleaner and are not familiar with reactions, you may want to check with the manufacturer.
How much copper sulfate would I use to deal with an infestation of very small leeches in the area where I enter my 1/4 acre pond.
Also I applied Natural Pond Cleaner, a natural bacteria, {crystal blue, I think} and now I have a thick white film on the top of my pond.Is this a normal reaction? Any ideas or suggestions
Thank you
Linda
